One
Having purchased a well-made outdoor fire pit, placed it a safe distance from flammable objects, and gathered an ample supply of necessary materials, start by loosely piling dry tinder centered in the bottom of the fire pit.
Tinder can be anything that's dry, brittle or fibrous and burns easily. Its primary function is to ignite the kindling. It's time to ignite your fuel when the kindling fire is hot. Taking care to allow free flow of oxygen, stack dry, well-seasoned firewood over the flame. Once ignited, these larger, thicker pieces of wood will help the fire burn longer and hotter.

Just a few pointers to help you along your way to ornamental grass heaven; make sure you dig a large (2 to 3 time the root ball) hole for planting. Tease the roots prior to planting and place the root ball just above ground level. Fill the hole with soil and firmly tamp it down.
When the clump gets too large or you notice the centre dying off, wait until spring time and dig it up. Being very careful use a pair of garden forks to pry the root ball apart. Immediately after splitting, re-plant each half following the above directions.
Finally, spring time is the best time to prune. Each year I cut and remove all my grasses right down to the ground and each year, I'm never disappointed with what returns.
Number 1 is Hakonechola. This zone 6 grass has leaf blades that are long and banded with bright yellow and slim green lines. This grass variety is dense and mounded and responds best when placed in the shade. For some reason, the Hakonechola is also a favorite of my yellow labrador!
Number 2 is Panicum or Switch Grass. This very tall (4 ½ to 5 feet) variety has flat leaves that are green in the summer, yellow and red in the fall and beige by winter time. This zone 5 grass needs moist soil and looks great between my balsam fir trees!
Number 3 is Molinia - Tall Moor Grass. This is my tallest grass reaching 6 feet straight up with leaves up to 3 feet long. This grass is very drought tolerant and rated for zone 4. The seed heads on this beauty are best described as airy and stay in place from mid-summer though fall. The plumes are golden yellow accented with a dark purple tint.
The reason I love working with Ornamental Grasses is because when winter comes, the grass may die but the stalks are still there. They continue to add visual appeal even during the cold blustery winter months. So if you can, I strongly advise adding (tall) grasses to your garden!

New Hayward Pool Filter Review
The new Hayward DE filter is the result of several years of changes on their plastic tank filters. Starting with the air relief valve, Hayward first had a manual valve that was opened by hand. Then they came out with the automatic air relief valve. This was actually a ping-pong ball in a unit at the top of the filter. When the filter was turned on air pressure would build between the water and ball. As the water pushed the air out the vent the ball would move up until it positioned itself to stop the water from leaking out the top. This worked fine until dirt collected in the seat where the ball sat; when dirt was present the ball would allow water to escape out the top of the filter. Now Hayward has gone back to manual air relief valves, so what was old is new again.
The old clamp that held the top and bottom of the filter tank together had two bolts opposite of each other. The clamp was wide which made it strong, but when removed if both bolts were not loosened it became very hard to replace the clamp. Part of the problem was the top would not sit down over the tank O-ring. They have solved this problem, Hayward has put only one bolt on the clamp and the lid fits down over the O-ring. This makes it very easy to replace the filter clamp.
One of the nicest features that I personally like is the center rod that holds the manifold, grids and grid support together as a unit. Many of the filters have two rods that make replacing the grids difficult. With one center rod the task is simple.
I have saved one of the best ideas for last. Hayward has made it simple for the manifold to be placed upside down on the ground. You might ask so what? Well most manifolds have an air tube that sticks out about six inches on top, as does the Hayward. The tube causes the manifold to sit at an angle, when cleaning the grids that are assembled to the manifold; the unit tends to tip over. Hayward has added extensions to the manifold, which enables it to sit level. This makes for easy cleaning and any other work that needs to be done on the unit.
In all I would say that the Hayward DE pool filter is worth the purchase if one is looking for a pool filter. I think that you will be happy for many years with this unit.
